Yearbook design/ photography and graphic design all go hand in hand. In order to make a successful yearbook and do well on our graphics projects, you need to know the difference between good and bad photography. Below are sets of good and bad photography that contain the same subject matter. You will receive participation points for commenting on these photographs.
What I am looking for in your response:
1. which is a strong successful photo and which one is week?
2. For each photo I need a minimum of 3 sentences EXPLAINING what makes each photo strong or week AND WHY
Photo one: I think that the plate of food is a strong photo. All of the colors pop, and go together. The photo is full and there is no empty space. Photo two: I think this photo is kind of weak. The plate is cut of which makes the photo more weak. The colors do not really go together, and the lighting is a little dark. Photo three: I think this photo is weak. The squirrel is a little blurry, and his action shot is not very good. Also the ground is blurry. Photo four: I think this photo is alright. The colors go well together, but it would be better if the girl was looking into the camera. Also the lighting on the girls face is scattered and not very good. Photo five: I think this photo is strong. the subject is clear, and showing a goo action pose. Most of the picture is filled with objects that help you focus on the main subject, the squirrel. Photo six: I think this is a strong photo. There is not soft light in the background. The colors go will of the god and the girls hair and shirt. There is emotions, and the two subjects blend well together.

Nice job. The picture of the girl holding the little dog is not the best because it is too pixelated.
DeleteThe first picture of food is a good photo. It is neat and balanced. The plate of food is directly in the middle of the photograph and not one food on the plate is above or outshining the others. It also looks appetizing.
ReplyDeleteThe second photo is baddd. It's choppy and cut off of the center. I also don't really appreciate the way the fork is placed in the photo.
The third picture of the squirrel is bad. It's not in the center and there is a ton of grey area. Also the above view wasn't the best angle to shoot the photo at.
The fourth photo is good. The squirrel is jumping and right in the center of the photo. He looks like he has personality, and I love the texture.
The fifth picture of the girl and her dog is okay, but not the best. You can see her and her god, but the face she's making and the green background sort of sets it off.
The last photo is good. Neither the dog or the woman is chopped out of the main picture. You can see the emotion and the meaning is shown clearly.

Very strong comments. A little hint as to why the 1st plate of food looks appetizing... it is on an orange plate. Restaurants do this to make food look better. : ) It works doesn't it?

The 3rd PIcture I would Say bad Cause the Squirrel is blurry and theres a lot of empty space which makes this picture really boring
The 4th PIcture of the Girl with the small dog i would say bad because its has a lot of grain and her head and arms are cut off and she's not looking at the camera in a portrait shot
The 5th picture With The Squirrel its a strong one cause it shows motion and it zoomed in on the squirrel
The 6 th picture i would say a okay one. The good points of it are the lighting great, focused on the dog and her. But bad cause her eyes are closed with her mouth oped way to much making look awkward
1. This picture is strong. It has interesting colors that make the photo more interesting. The food looks more delicious compared to the second photo.

3. The animal is not the focus of the picture. It is also blurry.
4. The squirrel is the main focus of the picture. It is an action shot that makes the photo interesting.
5. The lighting in the picture with the girl with the puppy is not good. Her arm is the picture showing her taking the picture making it look cheesy.
6. This picture is good. The lighting is good. Also, the women's happiness make the picture overall more cute.
The second plate of food is also out of focus.
DeleteThe first food picture is a strong photo. It has emphasis and the dish takes up almost all of the space. The lighting is also good and the person looking at it can see everything. The second food photo is a weak photo. It seems like it is zoomed in too much. Whoever took the picture cut off part of the dish. It also looks blurry. It is not a clear photo and the lighting is bad.
ReplyDeleteThe first squirrel picture is a bad one. There is no emphasis and the running squirrel is on the side and not in the middle. It is also very blurry and has a lot of empty space. The second squirrel photo is a strong picture. There is a lot of emphasis on the squirrel that is running right in the middle. It is very clear and has a good lighting. The squirrel takes up most of the space in the picture. This is also a good action picture.
The first dog picture is weak. It is blurry and is too zoomed in. Part of the objects in the picture are cut off. The lighting and colors are also bad. There is too much of a contrast between everything. The second dog photo is strong. There is emphasis being placed on the dog and it's owner. The lighting is good and everything is clear to see. Everything in the picture is not still. There is movement and emotions in the picture.

Delete1. Good because there are a lot of colors in the picture. It doesn't focus on one of the food items on the plate. The picture is the center of the shot.
ReplyDelete2. Bad because it is off center of the picture. The fork at the side is pulling away from the food. The food is nicely placed on the plate.
3. Bad because the squirrel is practically off the page. The squirrel is blurry. The picture has too much extra space.
4. Good because there is focus on both the human and the dog. The problem is it is blurry. The colors in the background are pulling away from the main focus of the picture.
5. Good because the squirrel is in motion, its not blurry. The squirrel is in the middle of the page. It would have been better if we were seeing the squirrel from the front view.
6. Good because there isn't a lot of things distracting the person that is looking at the picture. It is kind of blurred out in the back ground which is good. The dog and the person both meet in the middle of the page. Her purple shirt makes the picture pop.

Delete1)The first picture is a good picture. It shows all the components and ingredients that are on the plate and has good lighting. Another good point to this picture is there are lots of different colors from the food and plate.
ReplyDelete2)This is an okay picture but it is not very interesting. There is very little color and and is boring. There is nothing that stands out and makes you want to "eat" it.
3)This is not a good picture at all. It is very white and dull not really any color to it at all. Also the squirrel is off to the side so there is nothing really it is focused on and its blurry.
4)The next picture is an okay picture. It is good that it is so close up and has a specific focus point but the picture is blurry. Also the girl is not looking into the camera she is looking down.
5)This is a great picture because it is showing action. The squirrel is in the middle of jumping from the ledge to the lower level. Also there is not a lot of extra space it is focused in on the squirrel and is an all around great photo.
6)This is another very good photo because it close in and is showing the dog kissing its owner. Has great lighting and is again a very good picture.
#2 is super blurry also.

The first photo is a strong photo because it shows all the different colors of food on the plate. It also shows the light reflecting the plate. This picture gives me sense of being hungry because it is such a good picture of a variety of food.

The 3rd photo is weak. This is weak photo because it's blurry and out of focus. This photo of the squirrel needs to be enhanced
The 4th photo is a weak photo. This is a weak photo because it is out of focus and blurry. It order for this blurry picture to be better it needs to be enhanced
This 5th picture is a strong picture. This is a strong picture because it's a great action shot. The only thing that I don;t like about this picture is the watermark and background. All this photo needs is a little cropping and it will be even better
This last picture is a strong photo. This is a strong photo because it's a great picture of the lady and the dog because it's not blurry. I can't think of anything that would make this photo better then it currently is
Picture !: I think the first photo is strong because its clear and the lighting is good. I think the picture would be stronger if we could see more of the food in the back. But this picture makes the food look every appetizing which is probably the purpose.
ReplyDeletePicture 2: This is an okay picture, the plate is off center and there is not a large food selection. The fork on the side make the picture weaker. If the fork was off the side of the plate, it would be a lot stronger.
Picture 3: The ground is kind of blurry and its not every focused directly on the squirrel. If the squirrel was less blurry and more towards the center of the photo it would be a lot stronger. There is not a lot of color which makes the photo look dull.
Picture 4: The squirrel is directly in the center of the picture and the lighting on it is very clear. You can see where the squirrel came from and where it is going. The background is blurred some so you can focus better on the squirrel.
Picture 5: For this picture, the background is too noticeable. If the women was looking more at the camera and we could see her face better, it would be stronger. The lighting is not very good either because there is a shadow on her forehead.
Picture 6: This is a good picture because everything is balanced. Half of the picture is the dog and the other half of the picture is the women. There is good lighting and the picture is focused on the person and the dog, while the background is blurred out.

DeleteThe first picture is good. It's good because it shows the clarity of the food good and you can see the different foods. It cropped out most of the background making the main focus the food.
ReplyDeleteThe second picture of bacon and eggs is a weak photo. It is weak because it is blurry. The plate is also cut and the fork is placed randomly and gets away from the main point of the picture.
The third picture of the squirrel is a weak photo. This is because the squirrel blends into the background and it is blurry. Also you don't know where the squirrel is going. Not enough color.
The fourth picture of the other squirrel is good. This is because the squirrel actually has a destination and it is clear. It also doesn't blend into the background as much because there is a little bit of color and it is a good action shot.
The fifth picture of the girl and the dog is weak. This is because she is looking down and not at the camera. The background is too messy, such as the stuff on the door. It is also distorted.
The sixth picture of the other girl is good. This is because it is clear and you can see the expression of happiness on her face. Also it is cropped out well that the subject is the only thing you can focus on.
The first photo is a good photo because the subject matter is focused. The subject matter is in the center of the picture. This makes the beholder's eyes focus on the the subject matter and not anything else. The picture is also very colorful and not just a few colors.
ReplyDeleteThe second is a bad photo because the picture is blurry. The blurriness of the photo makes the photo a bad picture. The photo also has light and dark areas where the subject is located. This prevents the bacon and the fork to be seen clearly.
The third photo of the squirrel running is a bad photo because the photo is blurry because of the squirrel running. The photo also includes a lot of empty space that would need to be cropped out. The photo needs to be zoomed in more on the squirrel to become a better photo.
The fourth photo is a good photo because the subject matter is in clear focus. The subject is also in a good action pose. I do believe that the photo could be cropped a little to make the photo better.
The fifth picture of the women and her dog is a horrible picture because the picture is pix-elated. The background is also a reason for it being a bad picture. The clothes on the door is the bad part. The woman in the picture is also looking down.
The last picture is a good picture because the subjects are in focus. The picture has action and evokes emotion. Something bad about the picture is that the woman has her eyes closed.

ReplyDelete2.) This picture is weak because their isn't as much variety in the subject. The plate is not in the center of the picture and the lighting isn't great. If the fork was gone and the plate was moved to the left a little, the picture would be stronger.
3.)This picture is weak because their is a lot of blank area. The picture is a blurry and the subject isn't focused on enough. If the picture were more focused and at a better angle, the picture would be stronger.
4.) This picture is strong because the squirrel is focused on and the background was blurred out a little for more emphasis. This is a great action shot that was taken from the perfect angle. When you look at the squirrel, you can see the texture of the fur.
5.) This picture is weak because the lighting is bad. The subject is focused on the subject but she is looking down. If she had been looking at the camera it would be better picture.
6.) This picture is strong but not perfect. If she had she eyes open it would be better. The lighting and angle of the picture is what makes the picture strong.
Photo One: I think this is a strong picture, the plate is full. Also all of the colors mesh well and it is a full shot and the plate of food is the main and only focus. There is also balance, one side of the plate is not more full than the other. The entire plate is full and there is no empty space.
ReplyDeletePhoto Two: This is a very ammature shot. Part of the plate is cut out and the lighting is awful. And also, the food does not look appetizing at all and the point of a picture of food is to showcase it.
Photo Three: This picture is very blurry and out of focus. The only thing you can see is the squirrel’s tail. There is not very good subject matter because the squirrel is not looking. This is not a good example of an action shot.
Photo Four: This is a wonderful shot of a squirrel. The squirrel is facing the camera, so the subject matter is there. Also, it is in focus and mid jump so it’s a wonderful action shot.
Photo Five: This is not a good picture because it is very pixel-y. Also the lighting is bad. This shot is very ammature and looks like something you would put online after you get a new dog, not a professional photographer shot.
Photo Six: This picture is a very nice shot. The lighting is perfect and its completely in focus. Also you can see both the dog and the womans face. The colors go together well and creates contrast. The back is not focused in on so you are not concentrated on that.

ReplyDeleteThe first, the one of the full plate of food, picture is strong. This is because it has a better lighting on the food. The only flaw I can think of for it is that the camera could have been zoomed in a little more.
The second photo, the one with the bacon & eggs, is weaker. This is because the the shot is a little blurry.
Even though it's more of a close up shot, it still could be stronger with a better lighting or a better angle.
The third photo, the one with the squirrel running through the snow, is weak. I think this is because there isn't enough of a focus on the squirrel. If it was more focused on the squirrel, then the photo would be pretty cool.
The fourth photo with the squirrel jumping in the air is stronger. This is because the squirrel is the main focus of the picture and he is jumping.
The fifth picture with the women and her tiny dog is weak. I say this because though the women and the dog are the focus, their picture is blurry and the lighting needs to be improved.
The sixth picture with the women and her bulldog is strong. This is because they are the focus, the room is well lit, and the picture gives you a feeling joy.
